§ 04 — SCIENCE

Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated EGb 761 for cognitive impairment and dementia, with dosages of 240 mg/day showing statistically significant benefits in cognition, activities of daily living, and global assessment compared to placebo over 22-26 week periods. A 2025 meta-analysis of 782 patients with mild dementia confirmed significant superiority over placebo in cognition, daily functioning, and quality of life with medium to large effect sizes. However, efficacy in preventing dementia remains controversial, and added benefits over conventional anti-dementia treatments are scarcely investigated. Safety data generally show no important safety concerns, with adverse event frequencies similar to placebo. Evidence for tinnitus and acute mountain sickness indications has not shown beneficial effects.
