MEXIDOL
Russian neurometabolic antioxidant drug (emoxypine succinate) used for cognitive impairment, stroke recovery, and alcohol/phenibut withdrawal.
A meta-analysis of 10 prospective randomized trials (482 patients) demonstrated statistically and clinically significant improvement in cognitive function (MoCA scale, effect size 2.06, p=0.0002) in patients with chronic brain ischemia. A systematic review of 11 studies showed positive effects on ischemic stroke outcomes with significant NIHSS and modified Rankin scale reductions. Clinical studies also support use in post-COVID syndrome, ADHD in children, and alcohol intoxication recovery. However, nearly all published studies originate from Russian institutions with limited independent Western replication, and significant statistical heterogeneity has been noted across trials. The compound is not approved by FDA or EMA, and a 2024 analysis flagged its ergogenic potential as warranting possible WADA prohibition consideration.
