Kratom shows a paradoxical dose-dependent effect profile, with stimulant properties at lower doses and sedative effects at higher doses. User surveys indicate many individuals report benefits for pain and opioid withdrawal with few adverse effects, though escalating dose and polysubstance use significantly raise the risk of toxic events. Product contamination with heavy metals and biological toxins has been documented. Evidence for efficacy and long-term safety is weak, and the potential for serious adverse reactions should discourage unregulated use.
