SALVIA
Potent short-acting kappa-opioid agonist psychedelic from Salvia divinorum, producing intense dissociative visions.
Salvinorin A is the active psychoactive compound in Salvia divinorum, a plant traditionally used by Mazatec shamans in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is one of the most potent naturally occurring psychedelics, active at sub-milligram doses when smoked. Human and animal studies confirm its KOR-mediated mechanism, which is distinct from serotonergic psychedelics. Clinical research on Salvia divinorum is extremely limited, with most data coming from anecdotal reports and surveys. The broader Salvia genus (S. officinalis, S. miltiorrhiza) has been studied for cognitive, cardiovascular, and anticancer properties, but these involve different active compounds and are not applicable to S. divinorum. Evidence on long-term effects, addiction potential, and therapeutic applications remains weak and preliminary.
