PEYOTE
Small spineless cactus containing mescaline, a long-lasting classical psychedelic used for millennia in Indigenous ceremonies.
Mescaline has been used for over 5,700 years in Indigenous ceremonial contexts, with modern research confirming its 5-HT2A agonist mechanism shared with other classical psychedelics. Clinical observations suggest potential benefits for alcoholism and mental health conditions, though controlled trials remain scarce due to scheduling restrictions. Animal studies show anxiolytic-like effects and increased prosocial behaviour. Most intoxications are mild and self-limiting, with addiction and dependence being practically absent. Evidence for therapeutic use is largely observational and naturalistic rather than from randomized controlled trials.
