FLY AGARIC
Psychoactive mushroom containing muscimol and ibotenic acid, producing sedative-hallucinogenic effects via GABA-A agonism
Amanita muscaria has been used as an entheogen in Siberian shamanic cultures for centuries. The primary psychoactive compounds are muscimol and ibotenic acid, with muscarine present in trace amounts. Muscimol is a high-affinity GABA-A agonist used extensively in neuroscience research as a radioligand. Clinical evidence for therapeutic use is minimal; however, recent preclinical research suggests potential in neuropathic pain relief. Potency varies dramatically between specimens, making dosing unpredictable. Case reports document severe adverse effects including paranoid psychosis and loss of consciousness. The biosynthetic pathway for ibotenic acid was only recently elucidated, starting from glutamate hydroxylation.
