AOD-9604 was developed by Metabolic Pharmaceuticals and reached Phase IIb clinical trials for obesity treatment, demonstrating statistically significant weight loss in some patient cohorts. Preclinical animal studies showed it reduces fat mass and increases fat oxidation without affecting glucose tolerance or insulin sensitivity. Despite early promise, clinical development was discontinued, and the compound has not received regulatory approval in any major jurisdiction. Current human use is largely confined to the grey market and sports doping contexts, where rigorous safety and efficacy data are scarce. WADA has classified it as a prohibited substance under S2 (peptide hormones, growth factors, and related substances).
