PHENOTROPIL
Russian-developed racetam nootropic with stimulant, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective properties; WADA-banned.
Phenotropil was developed in Russia and is clinically used there for cognitive rehabilitation after stroke, vertebrobasilar insufficiency, and asthenic syndromes. A study of 400 ischemic stroke patients showed significantly better neurological recovery (p<0.0001) with 400 mg/day phenotropil over one year versus standard rehabilitation. Animal studies demonstrate stereoselective activity: R-phenotropil enhances memory at 1 mg/kg while both enantiomers increase locomotion and show antidepressant effects at higher doses. Preclinical work also reveals immunomodulatory and neuroleptic-like properties not typical of other racetams. Evidence is largely limited to Russian-language clinical trials and animal models; no large-scale Western randomized controlled trials exist, and long-term safety data in healthy users is lacking.
